Hug a Greetings Card Writer Day!

September 18th is a very special day – it’s Hug a Greetings Card Writer Day! Yes, that really is a thing!

Writing greetings cards isn’t a job that instantly springs to mind as a career choice…so what do card editors get up to on an average day and why does it matter?

What does an average Monday look like?

It could be writing a long sentimental verse, proofreading designs that are about to go to print, coming up with a pun for a funny card or monitoring what’s in and what’s out for card buyers.

Our editors write for thousands of new cards every year, ranging from birthday wishes or messages of condolence to more unusual sends like Galentine’s Day and “from the pet”.

And what people want to say on the cards our team write is really important. In fact, 71% of regular card buyers we surveyed this year said that the words were the most important feature of a birthday card.*

The Power of Words…

Words are pretty amazing – they have the power to affect our bodies and brains directly. Complimentary words trigger oxytocin in the body which promotes happy and positive feelings, whilst negative comments increase activity in the amygdala triggering stress and anxiety.

Our own OnePulse research mirrors this with 75% of respondents saying that the message in a card affects how they feel when they receive it.

…spreading the love every day!

They also said cards helped them with many of the interactions we value in life such as letting someone know you are thinking of them (42%), telling or reminding someone that you love them (24%) or offering support or comfort (35%). More than half also said that they actually find it easier to express feelings through a card than in person.** So, three cheers (and a hug if they don’t mind) for those special people who help us communicate our every wish, feeling and emotion through the small but mighty greeting card!
